GP ESSAY OUTLINE : The needs of the majority always outweigh the needs of the minority. Discuss.

Note : (Point) refers to the topic sentence for each body paragraph

Stand : The needs of the majority do not always outweigh the needs of the minority.

(Section 1) The pros and cons of populist sentiment

(Point) The utilitarian approach – the most benefit for the greatest number is one way of allocating resources.What the masses experience is a good gauge of the country’s progress

(Point) Stability – better chance of getting re-elected (in some democracies); reduce instability when the masses are happy

(Point) Specific scenario : Keep checks on the small circle of elite to prevent their manipulation of the less privileged masses

But,

What about the tyranny of the majority ?

(Section 2) Finding the right balance between managing limited resources and meeting the needs of different kinds of minorities

It is easier to just adopt the utilitarian principle when it comes to allocating resources.

But,

(Point) it is important to strive to do the right thing which is to allocate sufficient resources to meet the needs of smalller groups who would be otherwise marginalised. It is good and right to help preserve their human rights

(Point) There is always the chance that those who do not have their needs met will get the attention of foreign groups to help their cause. This could result in foreign interference in domestic affairs. Worst-case scenarios include revolt
