Essay Question : Does pride in one’s country still matter today?
An English soldier once wrote “If I should die, think only this of me: That there’s some corner of a foreign field. That is for ever England. There shall be. In that rich earth a richer dust concealed”. Rupert Brooke declared such a poetic and patrotic statement ; to lay down one’s life for his country. That was written in 1940s during World War 2. Is such pride or patriotic spirit important in this age? In today’s globalised world, we are encouraged to be part of the international community, “global citizens” instead of being part of a particular country. As the world becomes more interconnected, the lines between countries are blurred. Some may argue that pride may be unnecessary because pride in a country may fuel ultranationalistic sentiments that could threaten global security. Nevertheless, pride for one’s country is still important in our society. Pride instills a sense of belonging and unity among countrymen. To supplement belonging, pride insinuates feelings of responsiblity towards and ownership of the country in the people. In addition, pride in one’s country would secure the country’s sovereignty. Hence government should try to establish a sense of pride in its citizens. It still matters today.
